The Wedding Edit: Event Planner, Fiona Leahy

No one knows how to design an event like Fiona Leahy… Celebrated for her boundless imagination and signature event aesthetic of “matchimalism”, we spoke to Fiona for insights on emerging wedding trends and what makes the perfect tablescape.

Tell us about the first wedding to planned

It was a wonderful wedding in my homeland of Ireland. It gave me the event planning bug. That was 15 years ago and I haven’t stopped since.

What are the essential elements for a perfect wedding tablescape?

I believe the perfect tablescape differs so much according to where it is and what it's for, but I do have my favourite staples: A linen tablecloth, a lovely linen napkin, a touch of floral, a Murano candle holder with a pretty taper candle, and a charger. Those are always my essentials.

What trends are you seeing for weddings these days?

I believe that brides are embracing their own personal style so much more. I see a lot of lovely florals and patterns and use of colour that once upon a time may not have been used for a wedding, but in today's climate anything goes! Personalisation and making things unique touchstones are also a growing trend. I love seeing monogrammed or embroidered bespoke napkins, fans, watercoloured menus, and placements that are unique and thoughtful.

      Most unexpected wedding theme to-date?

I did a Dynasty themed wedding once, that was a lot of fun...

Flats or heels for a wedding?

I would say both. I love heels; they completely change my posture and my mood – I wear them for as long as I can, which sometimes can be forever, but I do like a reserve of a flat for all night dancing just in case. So to keep my options open, I would say heels and a flat back up!
