When it comes to conscious creativity, we believe it’s the small changes that add up to make a big difference. There will always be more that all of us can do to minimise our environmental impact, which is why we continually strive to find new and innovative ways of working in harmony with the world around us. Find out more about our ongoing commitments and responsible practices as we journey towards a more sustainable future for Malone Souliers.
Back when we worked on our SS21 collection, we experimented with a zero-waste approach, enlisting a specialist Italian supplier to realise our designs using archival leathers and fabrics. In the end, 95 per cent of the collection was made this way, turning previously forgotten materials into a thoughtfully crafted new line. The experience inspired us to revisit this zero-waste approach in further capsule collections. Today, where possible, we are committed to giving leftover materials a second life.
Leather is a core part of our craft, and we use only the highest quality hides that are both durable and biodegradable. However, we are conscious of its environmental impact and are taking steps to ensure we are sourcing our leather as responsibly as possible. We are proud to be a certified member of the Leather Working Group, an international organisation made up of stakeholders across the leather supply chain, working to promote environmental best practice within leather manufacturing and related industries. We closely follow the LWG standards, and work with like-minded Italian suppliers who are dedicated to producing the most beautiful leather with the lowest possible impact on the planet. When it comes to our packaging, we refuse to contribute anything to the world’s landfills. Entirely plastic-free, our shoe boxes are made from recycled cardboard, which is then covered in a pure cellulose paper wrap. Both materials are fully recyclable and FSC-certified, meaning their production follows strict standards for the protection of forests and the environment. We also secure the wrap to the box with a protein-derived, non-artificial glue which comes from a renewable source and is substantially less toxic, significantly minimising its environmental footprint. Our dust bags are made from GOTS-certified materials, meaning they meet globally recognised requirements for organic textiles. Lastly, when one of our wholesale partners asked that we secure our shoeboxes with elastic bands, we were pleased to be able to source all-natural rubber versions. You can read more on the FSC here.
We work with small, family-run Italian factories and suppliers to make our shoes. This means we can be confident that all employees are fairly paid and that there is no abuse of human rights across our entire supply chain. As a result, we have identified the risk of modern slavery and human trafficking to be extremely low, but continue to be rigorous in preventing it from ever occurring. Our business complies with all European standards for labour and employment-related laws, and we audit our Italian warehouses annually, with the understanding that if any concerns are raised, we will immediately terminate our relationship.
